Annual Report - 2000-01

(Report submitted to the meeting of the Governing Council on May 2, 2001)

The College reopened on June 1, 2000 after midsummer vacation. Dr.M.O.Koshy, who served the college as Principal for three years retired on March 31, 2000 and Mrs.Geetha Mary Mathews was the Lecturer in charge of Principal from April 1, 2000 to June 30, 2000. I have joined as Principal on July 1, 2000. The first year degree classes commenced on July 24, 2000 after an orientation programme by Rev.Ommen George, Vicar, St.Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kalamasserry. Parents also attended the session.

The students strength of the college as on November 1, 2000 was 602.

Important Activities of the College Union:

Apart from the regular activities, the College Union initiated the fund collection for the construction of a building to house the College Canteen.

Zoology Association:

Dr. Sugathan, Ornithologist and Mr. Noyal Thomas, IFS, Wildlife Warden, Kodanad were resource persons.

Commerce Association:

History Association:

In co-operation with the Career Guidance and Information Centre, the association organized informative sessions on competitive examinations for career opportunities.

Ten Day Camp held at St Thomas Higher Secondary School, Keezhillam, Sept.8-17, 2000.
Work undertaken: Monthanamolam - Karunnalipadam Road development project successfully completed. Classes/discussions/leadership development programmes/public meetings were organized.

Beautification of the college campus by planting trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, etc.
Debates, discussions, classes, etc. Debate on "Should India go Nuclear?" was held.

Health Awareness Programme:

Brains Trust:

Brains Trust held meetings twice every month. Quiz competitions and classes on various topics were conducted. Participation of students in Quiz competitions organized by the South Indian Bank, U. C. Institute of Information and e-Learning Technology (IIeLT):

Institute for Information and e-Learning Technology (IIeLT) established by the college management during 2000-2001 to offer skill development in the field of Information Technology and to get exposure to new methods of learning with the application of internet and related technologies to benefit the women students of Perumbavoor area on holidays and outside working hours of the college. Mrs. Vineetha Nelson, MCA., Miss. Rosmin George, Miss. Manju G., and Miss. Sangeetha ,S.,serves the IIeLT as Teacher/ Instructor/ Programmer/Skilled lab apprentices.
Miss. Rajeswary, skilled Assistant/instructor left the services of the IIeLT.

Efforts are being made to get this institute accredited by the Departments of Electronics and Human Resource Development of Government of India through the DOEACC Society. The IIeLT is being managed by a Committee with the Manager of the college as Executive Director. Several training programmes are undertaken by the IIeLT with focus on different applications relevant to the students from different disciplines. Courses in C Programming and Computerized Accounting Systems were offered to Mathematics and Commerce students. A special program in Designing and Publishing was offered for volunteering students of BA English. A computer Awareness project with the support of the M. G. University and the PTA of the college was undertaken through the IIeLT and an aptitude test was administrated. The Institute provides resource persons to handle the computer related topics in the UGC sponsored Remedial Course for SC/ST students.

Internal Evaluation:

Co ordinator: Mrs. Lisy Cherian, HOD, Mathematics continued as Co-ordinator of the Internal Assessment work in the degree classes. She attended a one day conference of the General Co-ordinators of all colleges of the M. G. University.

Counselling Centre:

Sessions on basic knowledge of counseling were held with the assistance of resource persons drawn from different fields.

UGC supported Remedial Course for SC/ST students:

A special program covering English, Hindi/Malayalam, Elementary Mathematics, Orientation for courses/career and skill development in Computer was devised and is being implemented with the financial assistance of the UGC. Mrs. Lisy Cherian, HOD Mathematics is the Coordinator.

Mar Thoma Institute of Management and Information Sciences (MIMIS):

The Mar Thoma Institute for Management and Information Studies (MIMIS) was established by the college management during 2000-2001 to offer certification for extra curricular programmes having academic content to benefit the women students of Perumbavoor area on holidays and outside working hours of the college. This institute is expected to open up avenues for teachers in curriculum development and help the college to start new courses in Management Sciences and other subject disciplines. MIMIS is managed by a Committee appointed by the Governing Council.

Certificate Course in Communicative English (1 Year):

Coordinator: Mrs .Mariam Kuruvilla Joseph
The course is designed to enable the students to acquire various communicative skills in oral as well as written English so that they become self-reliant and confident to face interviews, take part in group discussions, debates, make public speeches and also engage in creative writing. The course prepares them for a variety of careers.

Certificate course in The Creative Art of Home Management (inter-disciplinary course):

Coordinator: Mrs. Latha Premkumari M.
It is an innovative programme that aims at training the students in the relevant spheres and equipping them with the necessary skills to manage their home on their own. The short-term course for students involves the participation of both the teaching and non-teaching members of the college fraternity. It gave thrust to sewing, cooking, beauty care, vegetable gardening, naturopathy, home keeping, holistic life styles including Yoga, fabric painting, embroidery and flower arrangement.

Life Management Programme:

Coordinator: Mr. Biju Jacob Thomas
Zoology Department is conducting a life management programme which is intended to inculcate scientific temper to introduce applications of various biological disciplines in real life and to make students enjoy their studies outside classroom through field work. Different classes are arranged on topics like vermiculture management, aquarium management, medicinal plant culture, fish culture and pond management, environmental management, public health and hygiene.

Enrichment Programme-Mathematics Department:

Coordinators: Mrs. Annie Kurian and Mrs. Gigi George
The programmes provide skill based education to prepare students for various professional courses such as MCA, MBA, MIT etc. Two programmes: Orientation courses in C++ and Common ability Training in IT are offered. The first programme is for students and women of the locality and the latter is intended for the third year Degree students.

Computerized Accounting Systems and Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (CAS and EDP)

The department of Commerce offered a certificate course in Computerized Accounting Systems CAS from 2000-2001academic year onwards.

Enrichment Programme-History Department (CATCH)

Coordinator: Mr. Philip Cherian
The History department plans to conduct short-term courses in Tourism and Travel Management. In co-operation with the Career Guidance and Information Centre, the department organises coaching classes for the students to successfully participate in competitive examinations.

Elementary Training in Yoga:

Coordinator: Miss.Ancy Varghese
A short term course in Yoga was organized by the Physical Education Department for the hostel students.

Sports Meet and Physical Education:

College Sports Meet was held on February 15, 2001. The game of Archery was introduced in the college.

Utilization of unspent amount from PD Account with Government Sanction:

An amount of Rs. 32695 was spent on the purchase of 150 numbers of moulded plastic chairs utilizing the sanctioned caution money interest available in the PD account of the college.
Repair work of the northern end of the college hall for Yoga practice, southern side for Judo practice, masonry and concrete benches/seats for viewing the archery game, repair work of the shed of the college for the weight lifting practice, leveling with red earth and aligning game fields for Kho Kho, Valley Ball, Ball Badminton, Shuttle Badminton were completed utilizing Rs.95,000/- from the sanctioned Rs.1,36,000 of the unspent Atheletic fee in the PD account. Steps are being taken to extend the last date for utilization of the amount upto the current financial year 2001-02, as the amount was not available due to restrictions in the Treasury.

Construction Work: The work of the eastern wing of the second floor of the main building is nearing completion.

Canteen Building Fund:
The students college Union initiated a fund collection using Rs.10/- coupons prepared for the purpose and could collect upto Rs. till March 31, 2001.

College Hostel:
Mrs. Mariamma Baby, Warden applied for leave for a period of six months and left the college. The application of the former Matron submitted after six months of absence was received.

Miss. Rosmin George, Instructor of IIeLT was appointed Warden and Miss. Ancy Varghese, Guest Lecturer in Physical Education was appointed joint Warden from January 10, 2001.

Estate Officer:
Mr. P. P. John assists the management in the works related to farm, repairs and maintenance and new construction. He is also in charge of the hostel accounts.

Conclusion:

I am thankful to Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa - our Manager Thirumeni, members of the Governing Council, Staff Council, staff and non teaching staff members and students for their co operation and support. I am thankful to Almighty Lord for all the blessings we received during last year.
